Concerts pair orchestra, student artwork

By Elaine D. Briseño Journal Staff Writer

Student talent will share the stage with the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra when it performs a free concert Friday at V. Sue Cleveland High.

But it won’t be musical instruments they’re picking up. Instead, more than 80 pieces of student artwork will be projected on a large screen during the second half of the orchestra’s performance.

Marlene Bryan, spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra, said this is the first time the organization has put on a free event of this magnitude at a public school. She said many people may not be exposed to classical music, and the concert is a way to do that.

“We chose Cleveland because we wanted to reach out to a neighboring community,” she said. “They also have a fantastic concert hall. We wanted to bring people there to see this wonderful venue.”

Cleveland opened in 2009 and features the most recent technology throughout the campus, including the concert hall. There are screens that come down, a control room with three computers, an orchestra pit and a stateof-the-art lighting system.

The concert is being conducted by David Felberg and will feature Wagner’s Prelude to “Parsifal” and Bartok’s Viola Concerto, with Kim Fredenburgh on viola. After intermission, the program audiences will be treated to Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” suite. In 1874, Modest Mus- sorgsky created the music, using as inspiration 10 pieces of art from his friend Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in 1873. The suite features 10 movements, each representing one piece of art. The artworks included are “Gnomus” (The Gnome), “Il vecchio castello” (The Old Castle) and “The Bogatyr Gates.”

Bryan said in honor of how the suite was created, the orchestra teamed with art teachers from Cleveland High and Colinas del Norte Elementary.

“Students were asked to do the reverse,” she said. “They listened to the music and were then asked to create a piece representing the music.”

The Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra is a community group that features accomplished amateur musicians.

After a successful performance at the Italian Film Festival, Ronaldo Steiner was kind enough to send us this letter and these photos from the event.

Re: Concert at the KiMo Theater during the Festival

There has been nothing but very high praise for your performance, of Sunday Feb. 10th, during the opening of the Italian Film Festival. Those of us who are involved in the Festival are so grateful and so proud to have you be a part of this event.

The praise from our patrons has been incredibly positive. Many expressed great appreciation for your playing and for the program of music chosen. For some, who had not heard you play before, they were effusive in their comments about the quality of music that you presented.

We are all grateful to you for the contribution that you have made to the Children’s Hospital, through your performance. We are tallying up our costs and revenues and will soon be able to announce a final amount that we will be able to turn over to them.

We would very much like to include the Orchestra again in future Italian Film Festivals.

Mille Grazie,
Ronaldo
